1 Memory Box of the Citizen, by the citizen, for the citizen Walls disappeared, but the name remains engraved in stone. Past the walls of the trail, we remember the compiled beginnings. Every etching on a module shows the involvement of citizens. The Urban Folly was proposed in 2013 in GwangJu City. The intent of the designer is to give rise for participation from the community. The folly (memory box) allows Gwangju Citizens to hold their memories through their actions. Huge walls in the past protects the city. Citizens meaningfully become the owners of the city. The purpose of our design is to shape the invisible process of activities of Gwangju citizens in opposed to the visible materials. Urban Folly is created and sustained by the participation/involvement of the citizens.
2 Design Concept The value of Gwangju lies in the ‘consciousness’ of citizen participation. The Gwangju Urban Folly is composed of the will of the citizens. The value of Gwangju citizens contains both historical and cultural ‘participation’Word remains. Gwangju Democratization Movement, the Gwangju Biennale involves the participation of common citizens. Our proposal is not about the appearance of the folly but rather the folly comprises that of the memories of the citizens to design the act of participation.
Suggestions The process of forming a folly not only involves the active participation of individual citizens of Gwangju but also encourages encounters and exchanges among citizens. Citizens are able to capture their own memories of the place and deposit it into the Memory Box all over the city.
Uses Memorial boxes can be leased out where citizens are able to reserve the Memorial box online through a website. It can also hold wonderful memories to be shared all over the city.
Effects The Memorial Box can also serve as street furniture or light fixtures at night at rest areas that can be installed all over the city.
Extra The memorial box being an individual object allows of both partial and whole movement. The memorial box represents the pixel. The pixel is the form and changes spontaneously with unforeseen events, generated by the Citizens of Gwangju.
공공락커는 광주의 공공장소에서 흔히 찾아볼 수 있다. 시민들은 이 작은 보관함을 빌려 단기간 동안 개인적인 용품들을 안전하게 보관할 수 있다.
고석홍과 김미희는 총 448개의 락커로 이루어진 벽체 모양의 새로운 락커 월을 디자인했는데, 이 시설은 행인들이 앉아서 쉴 수 있는 쉼터를 겸하는 형태로 되어있다. 일부 락커는 일반적인 대여 목적으로 기능하는 한편, 나머지에는 투명한 문을 달아 내부를 훤히 들여다볼 수 있게 만들어 평범한 락커를 기억의 상자, 메모리 박스로 변형하였다.
이들은 웹사이트를 통해 일반 대중의 참여를 요청하였고, 이에 응한 광주시민들이 개인적인 오브제나 기념품들을 이곳에 담아 대중 앞에 공개하게 되었다.
'기억의 상자'는 구 도청 앞 분수대의 지하 아케이드에 설치되어있다. 이곳은 1980년 광주민주항쟁을 기념하는 대표적인 장소의 바로 아래에 위치하고 있어, 기억에 관한 급진적인 대비를 이루어 수직적인 긴장을 자아낸다. 하나는 공식적인 정치적 '기억'을 대변하는 데 비해 다른 하나는 다수의 지극히 개인적인 기억들을 대변하는 다이내믹한 아카이브이기 때문이다. 이 설치는 공적인 것과 친밀한 것, 이 도시의 역사가 지닌 정적인 면과 동적인 면의 경계에 대해 의문을 제기한다.
